The Chain
- The chain is a zone that temporarily exists while cards are played or abilities are active
- Cards are placed on the chain as the first step when playing a card
- Abilities are placed on the chain when they are activated or triggered
- It exists only as long cards and abilities are on it
- There can only ever be one chain
- If cards or abilities are played while a chain exists, they get added to the existing chain
- Movement does not create a chain unless it triggers abilities
Resolving the Chain
To resolve a chain, repeat the following steps until the chain is empty:
Permanent Card
If a unit or gear is the most recent item, no player receives priority.
- The card leaves the chain and becomes a permanent in the location it was played to
- Abilities from playing a card trigger and are either added to the chain or create a new one
- A cleanup is performed
Spell Card or Ability
If the most recent item is a spell or ability, the controller of it becomes the active player. The active player is the player who has priority and can do the following:
- Play reaction cards or activate reaction abilities
- The reaction will be added to the chain on top of the existing cards and abilities
- Invite players to act
- If not all players are relevant, non-relevant players can be invited to act
- Invitations may be refused
- If accepted, the invited player becomes the active player and must play a spell or activate an ability right away
- Pass priority
- The next relevant player in turn order becomes the active player and receives priority If the active player does any of these things besides passing, restart at the beginning of "Resolving the Chain".
If all relevant players pass, the most recent item on the chain resolves. A cleanup is performed. If there are still items on the chain, return to "Resolving the Chain".
